I watch your eyes like dogs watch shoes
And I realize I am falling in love with you, again,
and as I do I feel the landscape I once surveyed
so sure beneath my feet as it shifts beneath,
or in, or around, its own borders.
No more attached is it, as it were, to the core of the earth
as we all long used to suppose.
I realize the land has moved off to China or something
Somewhere in the South Seas I don’t know
And there are caverns I see and caves below that catch me
unexpected
And before I even know it this metaphor of love is becoming
rather a poem about something else I’m not sure what yet
maybe dogs, watching shoes.
Anticipating. Because I am putting them on I am going outside
And where I’m going maybe they can, too.
Like New Zealand, maybe.
